So here we have Sidney Orr, just released from the hospital after recovering from an almost fatal disease. Kreeg maar geen hoogte van die Nick, om maar iemand te noemen, en ook op de ik-persoon, de verteller, kon ik nauwelijks vat krijgen. There’s Chang, a Chinese immigrant who has a small stationary store but later violently attacks the main character. I believe in you, Paul. Anyone else feel this way?

The main character in the book Sidney Orr, walks the streets of New York, recovering from a serious illness. The narrative follows both the progression of this tale and its protagonist Nick Bowen, and the ‘real’ story of Sidney, whose relationship with his wife Grace the history of which is detailed in a number of footnotes begins to flounder soon after he acquires the notebook.

Auster writes brooding stories, there’s always something below the surface and to find out what’s going on is a challenge I love the overlapping stories, and the footnotes, and the characters. In any case, I forgot about it until I was back in Berlin, in the house of a friend, when I saw his book Hmm, they say that you either love or hate Paul Auster’s works.
On top of that, the story that Orr starts writing in his new blue notebook is somewhat a contemporary retelling of The Maltese Falcon austet, encouraged by Trause. What I also lz liked about this novel is it stimulated my own thinking about a number of themes including feeling trapped o, the day day jobthe fantasy of walking away from it all flitcraft and the realization that without any integrated change, you’ll repeat the same pattern, etc.

There are definitely elements of the weird about this story – the disappearance and relocation of the Paper Palace and its enigmatic proprietor, the ‘powers’ of the notebook – but it isn’t a paranormal or fantasy novel. I’m going to be honest – it was frustrating reading this book.
The thing is, these people whether it’s the narrator Sidney Orr, or the protagonist in the novel Sidney is writing, or the various other people that come and go are irrational, and they throw reason out the window the moment some coincidence appears.
