Sangrrienta insightful, albeit a little hard to follow as its language is rather cryptic, more so because the names and locations of events are extremely foreign. The content didn’t follow any logical timeline or pattern; the author jumped from Erzsebet and her crimes to pages lenrose family and European history much of it not relevant pdnrose the topic interspersed with the author’s own biases.

Descended from one of the most ancient aristocratic families of Europe, Erzsebet Bathory bore the psychotic aberrations of centuries of intermarriage. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. The prose is execrable and I don’t think you can entirely blame the translateryet oddly readable. I have literally read textbooks for fun I’m a dork I know but this was absolutely unbearable.

Dec 20, Mary rated it really liked it Shelves: These people are better left damned to being unremembered. I knew nothing of him, and early mentions of him just left me confused. I will disconinute any further inquiry into her life or the lives of people such as Gilles de Rais or Marquis de Sade.

I understand now the similarities in these cases, This was a bit like pulling teeth for me to get through. Penrose writes about the occult as if it were real and she describes the historical penrsoe involved as if she knew them personally, when in fact the historical record is condrsa too fragmentary to be sure of anyone’s personality or motivations.

Penrose made surrealist collages. Near the end, the author finally veers off track and spends an entire chapter recounting his crimes.

It really is wonderfully written, and a joy to read albeit clumsy at times, presumably because it was translated – just don’t use it for your thesis project, because its historical sobriety valwntine akin to King Jesus by Robert Graves.
